Program Summary & Location
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has partnered with University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) to offer students the opportunity to study Spanish language and culture in Heredia, Costa Rica. With the Latino population in the U.S. continuing to grow, there will be an increased demand for professionals in many fields with knowledge of Spanish and an understanding of Latin American culture. Courses are taught at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica (UNA). The university has four campuses located throughout Costa Rica - its main campus in Heredia hosts over 19,000 students. The university is only a few blocks from downtown, which gives you a chance to interact with locals and experience the culture.
Heredia was founded in 1705 and is known as the Ciudad de las Flores (City of Flowers). The city is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, coffee plantations and ranches, and is one of the gateways to the majestic Poás Volcano. It offers the peace and natural beauty of a smaller city, while providing easy access to the capital - only 25 minutes by bus to San José. With two other universities also located in Heredia, the city has a college town feel and always offers something to do. Nearby places to explore are the INBIO Parque, Monte de la Cruz, and La Paz waterfall gardens. Heredia is central enough that it is an easy bus ride to all corners and coasts of the country.

Housing & Meals
During the program you will be living with a host family, which offers an excellent opportunity for you to learn about family life in Costa Rica and practice your Spanish! Past students say that living with a family is one of the most valuable parts of their study abroad experience. You will learn as much at the dinner table as you do in the classroom. You will receive three meals a day from your host family.
