Stirling, Scotland Academics
Courses
Semester Students:
The University of Stirling has a wide variety of subjects that international students can enroll in, including, but not limited to:- communication studies
- history & political science
- literature
- sport science
- biology & environmental science
- computer science
- math
- psychology
- sociology
- SCQF level 8 = First year modules, lower division, generally 1st year courses (you are usually only permitted to take one, 1st-year module/semester. However you can request special permission to take two, 1st-year modules.)
- SCQF level 9 = Second year modules, lower division, generally 2nd year courses and require some background knowledge
- SCQF level 10 = Third and fourth year modules, upper division, advanced level and require considerable background in the subject area
If a module lists a pre-requisite, you don't have to have taken the exact course at UWEC but you are expected to have studied the same subject at the same level as the Stirling pre-requisite. Stirling departments are strict about this because it's important for you to take modules for which you have the appropriate academic background. For example, you shouldn't select a level 10 history course if you've only done one or two history courses at UWEC.
Stirling is NOT AACSB accredited so if you enroll in business courses, you should consult your ARCC advisor for how that will impact you. Business, management, marketing and retail departments are VERY strict on pre-requisites. In the past, students needed to have had at least UWEC MGMT 240 to enroll in a business & management course with a pre-requisite and UWEC MKTG330 to enroll in a marketing & retail course with a pre-requisite. The UWEC business core doesn't fulfill pre-requisites for business & management or marketing & retail courses.
Terms Offered:
When you find a course, there will be an "availability" line. Autumn = fall semester; spring = spring semester.
Summer Students:
ScheduleThe International Summer School (ISS) is divided into two, 4-week blocks.
- Four-Week Option: You will take one or two modules over the course of the four-week program.
- Eight-Week Option: You can take a maximum of two modules in one block. In the second, four-week block, you can take one or two modules.
A key feature of the ISS is the out-of-class study. The content will vary depending on the module but options include visits to the Scottish Parliament, Loch Lomond and the Tossachs National Park, Eilean Donan Castle and readings at the Macroberts Arts Center. These fields trips are also open to those not signed up for the course and are included in the program fee. A number of additional experiences to the major Scottish attractions will also be offered.
Internship Opportunity (summer only)
You must choose the eight-week option if you wish to participate in the internship course. In the second, four-week session, you have the opportunity to complete a three-credit, four-week internship under the supervision of the U of Stirling's Career Development Center. Past internship sectors have included: sports, environmental science, politics, and charity/non-profit marketing. This list is subject to change and additional areas will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The internship is full-time and you can expect to spend approximately 140 hours in the internship placement and an additional 10 hours on associated classroom sessions.
You cannot take a second course in block two if you participate in the internship course. If you are interested in the internship option, please contact the UWEC coordinator (listed on the main brochure page), to discuss what is required and the immigration implications as there will be additional immigration fees to plan for.

How to Find Courses at Stirling
Semester students:University of Stirling's Module Catalog if the year you want to go abroad isn't displaying, that means they haven't published the catalog yet. You can use the current catalog to help plan but having back-up modules is very important! Read the instructions on their website to learn how to search.
