Courses

You will start with a pre-semester intensive German class at Uni Graz. Once the semester begins, you will take regular university courses.
  • The International Office at UG has an excellent guide on how to look for courses, complete with screen shots. Use this guide to make sense of the Online Course Catalog.
  • There are also some courses taught in English. To see those for the current year, select the term and click search.  Be patient; it can take several minutes for all of the courses to load.
  • "W" = Wintersemester (fall) and "S" = Sommersemester (spring)
  •  The directions from UG say that you may register for classes at any level, from the UW-Eau Claire perspective, you may only register for undergraduate (bachelor's level) courses.
Treffpunkt Sprachen:
Treffpunkt Sprachen, Uni Graz's language institute, offers German as a Second Language classes. Exchange students can take one course for a reduced fee (€70Euro in 2020). More information is at https://treffpunktsprachen.uni-graz.at/en/  These courses may transfer back differently, depending on your level of German. Consult your German faculty advisor to discuss your specific situation.

Credits & Courseload

You must enroll in a minimum of 12 UWEC credits and can take a maximum of 18.
  • UG uses the European Credit Transfer System, or ECTS.
  • Two ECTS credits equal one UWEC credit.
  • The pre-semester intensive German class is worth 6 ECTS credits.  Therefore, you will need to register for at least 18 additional ECTS credits during the regular semester.
  •  UG classes carry anywhere from 2 to 12 ECTS credits, so the actual number of classes you take will vary.

UW-Eau Claire Equivalencies

To find courses that have been evaluated, go to the Transfer Wizard site by clicking here
  • Choose Austria, then click "Search"
  • Click on "Karl-Franzens-Universitat Graz"
  • Click "Search" again. All courses that have been evaluated for UWEC credit will appear.
If the course does not appear on the Transfer Wizard, it has not yet been evaluated for UWEC credit and will be evaluated when you are enrolled in it. The Transfer Wizard is a historical record. There is NO guarantee that the same courses will be offered in the future or that they will be offered during the term in which you will be abroad. You must use the current Graz offerings site along with the Transfer Wizard.

Specific to Uni Graz, you will find several courses on the Transfer Wizard with the prefix "SUNY". These courses are no longer offered.  In addition, because Uni Graz only recently instituted a uniform course numbering system, it may be difficult to determine if a course has already been evaluated. Contact the CIE with questions.

Grade Conversion

Austrian grades are on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being Excellent, 2 being Good, 3 being Satisfactory, 4 being Pass, and 5 being Fail. The UWEC equivalent will be posted to your UWEC transcript.  UWEC students abroad are not allowed to take classes pass/fail. Grades from UG are figured into your UWEC GPA and posted to your UWEC transcript.

Liberal Education Requirements

If you are in catalog year 2016-2017 or later, you can fulfill an Integrative Learning (I1) requirement through study abroad. You will opt in after being accepted to your program and must complete a series of assignments before, during and after your time abroad. Talk with your academic advisor about whether you need to complete an I1 requirement through study abroad. You must complete the first assignments prior to going abroad; retroactive enrollment is not allowed.

Language Immersion Requirement

All German majors and minors who wish to be certified to teach German must complete an appropriate period of language immersion in residence in a country in which the language is spoken. As long as your coursework is in German, this program meets the language immersion requirement.

Academic Calendar

You may study for a semester or an academic year. Fall semester technically runs from early September to the end of January.  Some professors will allow exchange students to take exams early. However, the College of Business and Economics does NOT allow early exams, nor does the Department of American Studies.  Also, early exams are not allowed for lecture courses (Vorlesungen), which encompasses most introductory level courses. Spring semester begins in early February and runs to late June. There is a break at Christmas and Easter.
