Courses

Semester students:
You will enroll in 12-18 credits per semester. Course availability is continent on student interest and enrollment and could change.

All students will take an intensive Portuguese language and culture course during the first four weeks of the fall semester or the first five weeks of the spring semester. After that, students can remain in language courses and/or they can enroll in elective credits, taught in English, in the following study areas:
  • International business
  • Environment/Conservation Management
  • Latin American Studies
  • Brazilian culture
  • Surfing

Summer students:
You will enroll in 3-5 credits in session one and/or 3-6 credits in session two. At least one, three-credit course is required each summer session. Course offerings are contingent on student enrollment and could change. Please note that session one has a very limited amount of courses offered. If you are looking for elective courses, session two may be the best option.

Introduction to Portuguese I (1cr) or Introductions to Portuguese II (1cr) is required for students not taking an intensive Portuguese language course. In addition to that, students will also enroll in elective courses, taught in English, in the following subject areas:
  • International Business
  • Environmental/Conservation Management
  • Latin American Studies
  • Surfing

Internships (available for all terms):
Qualified students may apply for internships during their time abroad. These internships are designed to complement the academic program. As a result, interns receive 1-3 credits (semester), 1-2 credits (summer), but no financial compensation. The schedule and number of work hours will be determined by the schedule of USAC courses. USAC will attempt to place students in their field of interest, but it is not guaranteed. You finalize your internship placement after you are onsite in Brazil and final say will be made by the internship sponsor.

Students need to have a GPA of 3.0 and be in junior standing by the time the program begins. Most placements will require Portuguese fluency, but not all. In certain circumstances, relevant work experience may be required. Past placements have included community center for at-risk children, teaching English at local schools, veterinary clinic, tech companies, wildlife conservation projects, etc. A refundable $200 fee is charged and returned upon successful completion of the internship.

Whether or not an internship will come back as internship credit for your major will vary.  Students are encouraged to contact their academic advisors to discuss what completing an internship abroad will do for them.

Liberal Education Requirements

If you are in catalog year 2016-2017 or later, you can fulfill an Integrative Learning (I1) requirement through study abroad. You will opt in after being accepted to your program and must complete a series of assignments before, during and after your time abroad. Talk with your academic advisor about whether you need to complete an I1 requirement through study abroad. You must complete the first assignments prior to going abroad; retroactive enrollment is not allowed.
