Courses

Course Numbering:
To understand the Aberdeen course catalog, you need to understand how to read the course codes. Each code has 2 letters, 2 numbers and 2 additional characters.
  • Letters = what department teaches the course
  • First number = level of course
    • 1 = first year, lower division
    • 2 = second year, lower division
    • 3 = third year, upper division
    • 4 = fourth year, upper division
  • Second Number = term course is offered
    • 0 - 4 = First term (fall)
    • 5 - 9 = Second term (spring)
  • The last 2 characters are for internal use only.
  • EXAMPLES:
    • CS 1025 = First year, computer science course offered in the fall.
    • GG 2509 = Second year, geography course offered in the spring.
Credits:
1 Aberdeen credit = 1/4 US semester credit. If you want to know how many US credits a course is worth, simply divide the Aberdeen credits by 4. A typical credit load is 60-70 Aberdeen credits (15-17.5 US credits). Aberdeen does allow students to take 80 Aberdeen credits but UWEC doesn't. The max you can take is 70 Aberdeen credits.

Pre-requisites:
Most students take courses in Level 1 or 2. Most Aberdeen departments will require you to have taken at least four classes in a specific subject area in order to enroll in level 3 or 4 courses. Science courses may have even more pre-requisites beyond the four course rule.

Courses with Special Concerns:
  • Engineering & Science/Environmental Field Courses: these are only allowed if required by UWEC and if space is available. You will need to list on your Aberdeen application that the course is mandatory for your major.
  • Law Courses: All students are subject to the normal law exam calendar and must complete exams to receive credit. Students enrolling for term 1 only (fall semester) are not eligible to take law courses.
  • Education Courses: The only education courses open to visiting students are ED1056, 1057,1080,1544, 1545, 1580, 2055, 2555 and MU 1555 IF space is available. You may have to do a background check (for an additional fee) if the course involves interaction with children in a classroom setting.
  • Science Courses: It is hard to schedule upper level science courses with anything but other upper level science courses in the same discipline (i.e. 3rd year biology courses are only meant to be taken with other 3rd year biology courses, not chemistry, history, Gaelic, etc.). If you MUST take both 2nd and 3rd year science courses in a single semester, OR must take upper level science courses across disciplines, OR must take both arts & science courses, you'll need to note this on your Aberdeen application so the relevant departments can consult. Mixing of subjects is NOT guaranteed.
  • Level 3 & 4 courses: some upper level courses like, English, history, politics, sixth century, have limited spaces. Visiting students, along with Aberdeen degree-seeking students will be entered in an electronic lottery to determine enrollment.
  • Key Learning Courses: many students get interested in the Key Learning (KL) courses. These are usually offered during the weeknights and weekends and in a distance learning format. If you're interested in enrolling in a KL you need to commit to attend classes on the weekends. You'll also need to make sure you can earn credit in these courses.
  • Restricted Areas: Study abroad and exchange students cannot enroll in
    • Clinical Medicine
    • Level 4 English and Linguistic courses
    • BM 4501 Biomedical Honours Project
    • SR 4502 Sports Practicum.

How to Find Courses at Aberdeen

Aberdeen's catalog is found here. Click on any subject to view the courses offered. Be sure to use the above information to help determine when courses are offered.

The course catalog for the following academic year is typically published in the summer. For example, the 2019-20 catalog/schedule was published in June 2019.

When you find courses that you are interested in, use the UWEC transfer wizard below to determine how the courses come back to UWEC.

UW-Eau Claire Equivalencies

To find courses that have been evaluated, go to the Transfer Wizard site by clicking here
  • Choose United Kingdom, then click "Search"
  • Click on Univ of Aberdeen
  • Click "Search" again. The first 300 courses that have been evaluated for UWEC credit will appear. Note that Aberdeen has more than 300 courses in the wizard so you'll need to narrow the search by using the course code (CS, GG, etc.)
If the course does not appear on the transfer wizard, it has not yet been evaluated for UWEC credit and the study abroad coordinator will have it evaluated after acceptances are made.

Please remember that the transfer wizard is a historical record. There is NO guarantee that the same courses will be offered in the future or that they will be offered during the term in which you will be abroad. It is very important to use the current Aberdeen offerings site along with the transfer wizard. Using only the transfer wizard may result in inaccurate course knowledge.

Liberal Education Requirements

If you are in catalog year 2016-2017 or later, you can fulfill an Integrative Learning (I1) requirement through study abroad. You will opt in after being accepted to your program and must complete a series of assignments before, during and after your time abroad. Talk with your academic advisor about whether you need to complete an I1 requirement through study abroad. You must complete the first assignments prior to going abroad; retroactive enrollment is not allowed.
