Courses

UW-Eau Claire students may take classes in Arts/Humanities, Business, Computing, Education, Health Services, Criminal Justice, or Resource Science and Management.  Many study abroad students take the Outdoor Education class, which includes intensive field experiences (Outdoor Education comes back to UWEC as Geography Upper Division Elective (GE III; Liberal Education K2) and is now a physical activity credit). Please note that due to the different calendar system that Australia uses, the sequencing of courses may not align with UWEC.

Service Learning: SCU offers a unit call COM30001 Community Engagement Project (ELEC 908 UD Elective, R3). Students who enroll in this unit can complete their service learning requirement as long as they complete the UWEC Service Learning forms. Completion of the service learning requirement is not automatic.

Credits & Course Load

  • Students are required to enroll in 36 SCU credits/semester.
  • One SCU unit is worth 12 SCU credits.
  • 12 SCU credits = 4 UWEC credits.
  • Students are required to take 3 SCU units so students will bring back 12 UWEC credits.

How to Find Courses at SCU

Southern Cross units are available online: click here. Follow these steps to find units:
  • Select "Undergraduate," under the "Unit Level" tab
  • Select "Session 2," under the "Session" tab, to view units offered during our fall semester.
  • Select "Session 1," under the "Session" tab, to view units offered during our spring semester.
  • Select "Lismore" under the "Location" tab (*note that you cannot take any courses that are located elsewhere or are "external" (online))
  • Remember that these are current classes, and there is no guarantee that the same classes will be offered the semester you plan to study abroad.
To see a list of popular units taken by international students, you can click here and scroll down to "What can I study in Lismore" and click on the subject areas.

How Courses Come Back to UWEC

We have sent many students to SCU and therefore the transfer wizard holds a lot of outdated information that we cannot delete. To help, here are some updated unit offerings and when they're typically offered. This should be used as another tool. Units are always subject to change in availability at SCU. The Transfer Credit Wizard (TCW) equivalency will be used in the event of discrepancies.

To find courses that have been evaluated, go to the Transfer Credit Wizard (TCW) site by clicking here
  • Choose Australia, then click "Search"
  • Click on Southern Cross University
  • Click "Search" again. All courses that have been evaluated for UWEC credit will appear.
If the course does not appear on the transfer wizard, it has not yet been evaluated for UWEC credit.

If the course does not appear on the TCW, it has not yet been evaluated for UWEC credit. You can request an evaluation by sending the course title, number and description to your UWEC study abroad coordinator. It can take several weeks for an equivalency to be established.

The TCW is a historical record. There is NO guarantee the same courses will be offered in the future or that they will be offered during your term abroad. Begin with the current SCU catalog, then move to the TCW.

Grade Conversion

All grades you earn at SCU will count in your UWEC GPA; you cannot take courses pass/fail. The grades will appear on your UW-Eau Claire transcript using the conversion scale below, approved by the UWEC Registrar’s Office. This scale is non-negotiable.
SCU Grade UWEC Grade
High Distinction A
Distinction A
Credit B+
Pass C+
Fail F

Liberal Education Requirements

If you are in catalog year 2016-2017 or later, you can fulfill an Integrative Learning (I1) requirement through study abroad. You will opt in after being accepted to your program and must complete a series of assignments before, during and after your time abroad. Talk with your academic advisor about whether you need to complete an I1 requirement through study abroad. You must complete the first assignments prior to going abroad; retroactive enrollment is not allowed.
