Academic Overview

You will choose from classes offered at your LdM campus during the term you are attending.
  • The Florence campus is the original LdM campus and offers the widest course selection, particularly in the fall and spring. Summer and Winterim offerings are much more limited.
  • The Rome and Tuscania campuses are much smaller, with correspondingly small course offerings.
  • The Three Cities program offers a set curriculum of four-five courses which all students must take; there is no class choice.
  • LdM business courses are AACSB accredited through Marist College
Credits:  One LdM credit = one UWEC credit.  Most classes are 3 credits, but some STEM and Italian language classes are four.
  • Semester-long students must take a minimum of 12 and may take a maximum of 15 credits; an Italian language class is strongly encouraged.
  • Summer session students can take 3 or 6 credits. 6 credits are required for UWEC summer financial aid.
  • Winterim students must take 3 credits.
Important Notes for Business Students:
  • LdM business courses are AACSB accredited through Marist College.
  • You must have completed Econ 103 & 104, Accounting 201 and IS 240 OR BSAD 180 in order to take business courses at LdM that require their equivalents of BUS 130 or BUS 195.
  • Additional pre-requisites may apply to certain business courses.
  • BUS 210, which transfers back here as MKTG 330, is often cancelled during the Winterim session due to lack of interest.  Winterim course cancellations are not announced until early December.
Internships
During semester programs only, the LdM Florence & Rome campuses offer credit-bearing internships in limited areas such as business, communications, and graphic design.  Specific internships are publicized approximately three months in advance of the term. Internship placements in Florence are quite competitive; Rome has had more internships than applicants in certain areas.

In three-credit internships (minimum of 135 contact hours), you are expected to work 10-12 hours/week. A limited number of six-credit internships (minimum of 260 contact hours) are available. These internships require 20 hours of work per week. In either case, you must maintain 15 total academic credits.  Because the work must be scheduled around your class schedule and at times convenient for the business, hours are often scheduled on Fridays, and interns may be required to work some Saturdays, also, depending on the needs of the company.

How to Find Courses at LdM

  • Choose "Academics" on the top toolbar, then
  • "Schedule" from the left sidebar.
  • Select the LdM site and term you are interested in.

How Course Come Back to UWEC

Rome STEM Program:  you can find the tentative courses being offered each semester, along with the UW-Eau Claire equivalency, here:  STEM Equivalencies, Rome Campus

To find other LdM courses that have been evaluated, go to the Transfer Credit Wizard (TCW) site by clicking here
  • Choose Italy, then click "Search"
  • Click on Lorenzo de Medici
  • Click "Search" again. All courses that have been evaluated for UWEC credit will appear.
  • In order to determine when the course is offered, you must start with the LdM course offerings linked above
If the course does not appear on the TCW, it has not yet been evaluated for UWEC credit. You can request an evaluation by sending the course title, number and description to your UWEC study abroad coordinator. It can take several weeks for an equivalency to be established

The TCW is a historical record.  There is NO guarantee that the same courses will be offered in the future or that they will be offered during your term abroad. Begin with the LdM course schedule, then move to the TCW.

Liberal Education Requirements

If you are in catalog year 2016-2017 or later, you can fulfill an Integrative Learning (I1) requirement through study abroad. You will opt in after being accepted to your program and must complete a series of assignments before, during and after your time abroad. Talk with your academic advisor about whether you need to complete an I1 requirement through study abroad. You must complete the first assignments prior to going abroad; retroactive enrollment is not allowed.
