Courses
Semester Students:
Massey University is located on three campuses but you can only take courses offered at the campus you attend. To see a list of subjects available at each location see: Massey University subjects by campus. Not all locations offer the same courses so it's important to identify where you will conduct your studies. Courses are subject to availability and approval of pre-requisites. Massey University is AACSB accredited.Summer Students:
You will choose from one of two tracks that are offered. Students must be a major or minor in the area they choose. Students who cannot show that they've taken past courses within the area they choose will not be allowed to participate.1. Communication & Marketing Track
Open to journalism, public relations, advertising, marketing and communication majors.
Expedition: You will begin with a two-week expedition all throughout the North and South Islands of New Zealand. You will learn about brand and imaging in the tourism industry. You will visit a lot of the iconic locations in New Zealand and do case studies of the organizations and companies that you encounter. The academic staff from Massey University and the in-country experts will give you an insider view to the culture of New Zealand. To learn more about the route, click here.
Internship: After the two-week expedition, students will be placed in a four-week internship that best fits their major. All internships are in and around Wellington. 2. Disaster Risk and Emergency Management Track:
Open to emergency management, homeland security, public safety, engineering, urban & regional planning, public policy, sociology, geography, and health science majors.
Expedition: You will begin with a two-week expedition around the North and South Islands of New Zealand. You'll learn about New Zealand's hazardscape and the responses to emergencies and the management of risks. The academic staff from Massey University and the local experts will educate you on in-depth knowledge and personal experiences related to these subjects. To learn more about the route, click here.
Internship: Following the two-week expedition, you will be placed in a four-week internship based in/around Wellington. You will be placed in an internship that aligns with your major. Wellington is home to the government and headquarters for many organizations, and the Joint Centre for Disaster Research. Credits & Course Load
Semester Students- You will take four courses at Massey.
- Each course is worth 15 Massey credits = 3 UWEC credits.
- A full time course load/semester is four courses, which means you'll bring back 12 UWEC credits.
- All summer students earn 6 U.S. credits. 3 credits for the expedition; 3 credits for the internship.
How to Find Semester Courses at Massey
Semester Students:You can find a searchable course catalog on Massey's website. A few notes when viewing courses:
- Semester one = our spring semester
- Semester two = our fall semester
- The Mode needs to be internal (not distance)
- You will need to find courses offered at the same location.
- Courses that are listed as "foundation" courses are NOT open to study abroad students.
- If a course has a pre-requisite, you will need to show you've taken a similar course at UWEC
How Courses Come Back to UWEC
Semester Students
To find courses that have been evaluated, go to the Transfer Credit Wizard (TCW) site by clicking here.- Choose New Zealand, then click "Search"
- Click on Massey Univ
- Click "Search" again. All courses that have been evaluated for UWEC credit will appear.
The TCW is a historical record. There is NO guarantee the same courses will be offered in the future or that they will be offered during your term abroad. Begin with the most current Ghana catalog, then move to the TCW. ?
Summer Students
Communications & Marketing Track:- 3 credits of MKTG Upper Division Elective for the expedition portion
- 3 credits of MKTG Upper Division Elective for the internship portion
- If you are a communications student, you should discuss this program with the CJ department to see if they'll allow you to petition the courses to come back as CJ courses. Or if you need the internship to count towards a specific degree requirement, you will want to work with your department to arrange that.
- 3 credits of Upper Division Elective, LE: R3 for the expedition portion
- 3 credits of Upper Division Elective, for the internship portion
- If you need the internship credits to count towards a specific degree requirement, you will want to work with your department to arrange that.
Grade Conversion
All grades you earn at Massey will count in your UWEC GPA; you cannot take courses pass/fail. The grades will appear on your UW-Eau Claire transcript using the conversion scale below, approved by the UWEC Registrar’s Office. This scale is non-negotiable.Massey Grade | UWEC Grade |
